In early February, US Consulate General Dhahran hosted Ms. Ilene Evans to commemorate Black History Month. Ms. Evans, an African American poet, storyteller, singer, actress, and educator, performed different pieces that portrayed the rich African American culture to many audiences including the media, educators, students, artists, and community leaders.

On February 3, 2009, Ms. Evans’ depictions of African American struggles and triumphs began with a presentation of poetry and prose at the Prince Mohammed University that conveyed the earliest days of slavery in America. She continued her portrayal with a one-woman performance of General Moses: Stories from the Life of Harriet Tubman, a play about the life of a runaway slave who led hundreds of slaves to freedom over the course of 10 years. Ms. Evans ended her expose with an evening of poetry at the Consulate General in Dhahran, where she performed Harvest of Dreams; a collection of poems that illustrates African American aspirations, achievements, and contributions to American history and culture.

The performance left a lasting impression on all audiences in the Eastern Province.
