Celebrating World Earth Day 2009 with S.A.V.E.
In observance of World Earth Day, the Society of Advocates and Volunteers for the Environment (SAVE) sponsored events to celebrate the earth and exchange ideas on how to preserve and enjoy it at the same time!
On April 30th SAVE organized a fun in the sun 6 km walk, talk, laugh and pledge activity, in which over 120 people participated and volunteered, including Zainab Zaid, the Public Affairs Officer from the US Consulate General in Dhahran. The event was launched with a series of outdoor fitness activities including group movement and a fun walk & talk along the Dhahran fitness trail. The activity encouraged participants to think about what they can do at an individual level to reduce their carbon foot print on the planet. Participants were encouraged to give a written pledge and share ways to preserve the environment. After a long day of thinking, talking, walking and pledging, the evening cooled down into a delicious shawarma social on an Arabic seating area in the BMX track where all attending kicked back and enjoyed the earth they pledged to SAVE!
SAVE is a small but active group in the community that promotes a sustainable world for all Earth’s species. It was founded in 1992 on the premise that actions of individuals make a difference locally and globally. SAVE’s agenda is project based, which include the promotion of office and municipal-waste recycling, environmental awareness, wildlife protection, and many other environmental initiatives. SAVE also promotes wildlife protection through raising funds (up to 100,000 Saudi Riyals per year) to donate to organizations supporting the preservation of biodiversity such as the Arabian Leopard Trust and the World Wildlife Fund for Nature.
