 John Kincannon


Consul General John Kincannon

John Kincannon became Principal Officer at the U.S. Consulate in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia in July 2005. Previously, he served as Office Director for Programs in the Office of the Coordinator for Counterterrorism at the State Department.

John Kincannon joined the Foreign Service in 1985. From 2003-2004, he served as Deputy Director of the Office of Regional Affairs in the Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs (NEA) preceded by a short assignment as Deputy Director for Press and Public Diplomacy. From 2001-2003, Kincannon was Public Affairs Counselor at the U.S. Embassy in Islamabad, Pakistan (2001-2003) during the ouster of the Taliban government in Afghanistan and among a handful of diplomats who reopened the U.S. Embassy in Kabul in December 2001. For three months in 2003, Kincannon served on the staffs of Ambassador Jerry Bremer and Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Jay Garner in Iraq. Kincannon’s past assignments have included Public Affairs Officer in Dhaka, Bangladesh (1997-2001) and Sana’a, Yemen (1994-1996). From 1992-1994, he served as Desk Officer for North Africa at the U.S. Information Agency. Kincannon served as Press Attaché at the U.S. Embassy in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia during Operation Desert Shield/Storm (1990-1992), including wartime service in liberated Kuwait. Earlier assignments include advanced Arabic training in Tunisia (1989-1990), Assistant Public Affairs Officer in Peshawar, Pakistan working on issues connected to the Soviet occupation and withdrawal from Afghanistan (1987-1989), and junior officer training at the U.S. Embassy in Amman, Jordan (1987).

Kincannon holds a B.S. in Foreign Service from Georgetown University. He has a sixteen year-old son, Ramsey. Kincannon speaks Arabic and French.
